Kate's Picks: 7 Things I Tried in January and Loved

planning-worksheet

It was a good month for things I tried and loved, a now regular monthly staple on W&D—I actually had to widdle down my list from its original version! The things that made the final cut are those that made my life a little easier, a little more enjoyable, and a little more focused last month.

Below you’ll find recommendations that solve problems like how to predict the amount of time it takes to get things done, how to effectively lift and extend your eyelashes, and how to help yourself relax in the midst of a stressful day.

Anything you tried recently that you’d like to share with me? I’d love to hear it down below!

Follain Eye Cream: Firm + Brighten

$36

I have puffy eyes from, well, life, and I hadn’t been able to find a clean eye cream that had the same power as traditional firming and brightening formulas. I love the texture of this cream—it’s silky smooth and instantly plumps. I’m using this in the morning and evening, and the airless container distributes the perfect amount each time.

ILIA Limitless Lash Mascera

$28

This mascara has had a cult following for a while now, especially because it’s one of the best performing products in the clean beauty space. I gave it a try last month and I’m a total convert. I particularly love how light the formula is and how the brush extends and lifts my lashes without leaving any clumps behind.

Good Stock Soup

$9 per Box

When the flu took over our house I was so thankful we had a freezer full of healthy, wholesome, high-quality soups to nurse our family back to health. These delicious soups are sent directly to your home in packs of six, nine, or twelve boxes, all designed to bring the comfort of homemade soup to your home in the time it takes to heat up a can of preservative-laden soup from your pantry. Our package came with gourmet croutons and little brownie bites for a bite of something sweet. The soup offering is friendly to all diets with vegan, dairy-free, nut-free, and vegetarian options.

WEAR

Everlane Glove Boot

$155

I’ve had these boots in my shopping cart multiple times and now that I finally have my own pair, it’s the only boot I find myself slipping on in the morning. They’re comfortable and instantly make any outfit look chic and put together. There is enough support for people like me (I tend to roll my ankle while simply walking on a flat surface) and the heel is just over an inch tall. This is enough lift to make all of our butts like good without sacrificing comfort. 10/10 would highly recommend. In fact, I think I’m going to order a second pair in black.

READ

The Idiot by Elif Batuman

$17

I devoured this book and have thought often about Selin, the book’s whip-smart yet socially befuddled heroin, as we witness her internal monologue while at the cusp of adulthood. There have been so many times where I’ve felt as if I didn’t quite understand how life worked and wondered why it was so easy for others to simply follow their passions, live their lives, and become adults without feeling totally confused by the invisible rules surrounding love and friendship. Batuman has a super unique voice and writing style. It is a beautifully sincere book peppered with dry humor that had me cracking up throughout.

P.S. If you haven’t yet signed up for The Complete Wit & Delight 2020 Reading List, which contains 158 books recommended by myself and readers (we’ll be adding more titles quarterly!), you can do so here.

RELAX

Equilibria CBD Oil

Starting at $29

Used to treat a range of issues like inflammation, pain relief, sleep, menstrual pain, and everyday anxiety, CBD is the health product of the moment. What I really like about Equilibria is the education around product use and optimal dosage. They encourage new users to keep a journal detailing their mood and changes in their bodies so they can tune in to the right amount of CBD needed to treat symptoms. The company is also female-founded and female-focused. Win-win.

FOCUS

The Pomodoro Technique

Free!

I learned about this productivity technique from our Brand Director, who wrote about it here. It’s been incredibly helpful in helping me get started and stay focused because it breaks tasks down into easy-to-digest time increments of twenty-five minutes. I’ve been better about predicting how long a task will take, because the technique teaches you to plan your day around how many twenty-five minute cycles you’ll need to set aside for each task.

For people like me (ADHD brains), predicting how long a task will take and when to complete it is actually harder than getting it done. I would highly recommend you read Bridgette’s post and download the free habit tracker sheet we designed to use this technique!
